New Zealand – Aotearoa in Māori language (au-tee-uh-row-uh), meaning land of the long white cloud – is a popular destination for Australians, who come to road trip, visit friends and family, hike, check out the amazing wineries, ski and snowboard.
According to Māori legend, a demigod by the name of Māui once snuck onto his brothers’ canoe to accompany them on a fishing trip. Instead of a hoki, Māui’s magical fishhook pulled out the North Island of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Its name in Māori is Te Ika a Māui (“Māui’s Fish”), whereas the South Island is Te Waka a Māui (which many stories translate to “Maui’s Canoe”).
The North Island is a breathtaking mix of conical mountains, geothermal phenomena and golden beaches, and it’s also considerably warmer than its southern counterpart, which is probably why two-thirds of Aotearoa/New Zealand’s population have chosen to call it home.
The South Island is particularly famous for its wine regions, scenic drives and adventure activities on offer – from spotting seals, whales and dolphins in Milford Sound to skiing or snowboarding around alpine resort towns such as Queenstown and Wānaka.
If you’re thinking about visiting New Zealand, it might be a good idea to consider travel insurance with medical, trip and belongings cover, such as what Freely offers. We also cover things like snow sports and adventure activities with our Daily Boosts (which you can add to your policy at an additional cost).
From Australia, you can fly directly to a number of cities in Aotearoa/New Zealand, including Auckland and Wellington on the North Island and Christchurch and Queenstown on the South Island.
Depending on where in Australia you depart from, the flight to Aotearoa/New Zealand can take as little as 3 hours. Airlines such as Qantas, Air New Zealand and Jetstar offer regular flights, and often have sales offering cheap deals.
The majority of Australian passport holders do not need a visa to enter Aotearoa/New Zealand, and can visit, live and work there indefinitely. Entry and exit conditions can change quickly though, and also differ for people with criminal records and/or who have been deported from another country before.
For the latest information on entry requirements and travel advisories, you can check the Australian Government's Smartraveller website, contact your nearest New Zealand embassy or consulate in Australia, or visit the official New Zealand Immigration website.
There’s a close relationship between Australia and New Zealand.
Our two countries have what’s called a reciprocal health care agreement (RHCA), which provides Australians access to publicly funded health services for immediate necessary medical treatment.
Additionally, under New Zealand’s Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), non-residents and foreign visitors may be covered for injuries arising from an accident in New Zealand.
However, there are some limitations to these schemes. For instance, mishaps that require emergency evacuation and repatriation may not be covered. Similarly, costs associated with a mishap, such as emergency travel arrangements, may not be covered.
Travel insurance – such as what Freely offers – can provide certain protections beyond what the RHA and ACC may cover.
Freely’s Overseas Explorer Plan includes unlimited* overseas medical and emergency dental cover, as well as telehealth access, 24-hour emergency assistance and cover for trip and belongings.
Plus, by adding our Daily Boost to your base policy (at an additional cost), travellers can also enjoy cover for things like snow sports, motorcycle riding and adventure activities.
For more detail, be sure to read the PDS. *Medical and dental cover will not exceed 12 months from onset of the illness or injury.
Yes, we may provide cover for snow sports in New Zealand – but you need to add our Snow Sports Boost at an additional cost to the base policy for all the days you're on the snow. (Our Explorer Plan alone does not automatically cover snow sports.)
Our Snow Sports Boost provides cover for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding – as well as snowmobiling. If you’re planning on going off-piste, we’ll still offer coverage, but only if you're not going against any warnings or local advice.
Also be aware that our Snow Sports Boost is not for those who are participating in a professional capacity or racing. For more details, be sure to read the PDS.
Freely’s Overseas Explorer Plan can provide cover for travellers renting a car or campervan in New Zealand.
Our Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess Boost (which travellers can add to their base policy at an additional cost) can provide protection against costs that arise in the event that a rental vehicle is damaged or stolen in your care.
In other words, Freely will cover the rental vehicle insurance excess or the repair costs to the rental vehicle that you’re liable to pay, whichever is lower.
The cover applies if you:
1. Have added our Rental Vehicle Insurance ExcessBoost to your base policy for the days you’re driving;
2. Hire a rental vehicle (must be under 6 tonnes);
3. Are the nominated driver on the rental vehicle agreement; and
4. Have purchased comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for the rental vehicle for the hire period.
For more details, be sure to read the PDS.
Aotearoa/New Zealand’s geography and location mean it can be impacted by natural disasters such as earthquakes, bushfires, floods, tsunami and volcanic eruptions.
Freely’s travel insurance for New Zealand can provide some protection if you are directly affected by circumstances outside of your control – including unforeseen natural disasters.
It’s important to stay informed about any forecasts for natural disasters in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Keep an eye on the country’s Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management, the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System and Metservice. If you plan on going anywhere near active volcanoes, monitor the GeoNet website.
Please note that we don’t offer coverage for claims directly arising from you not following an advice or warning of “Do not travel” on the advice issued by the Australian Government on the smartraveller.gov.au website.
For more details, be sure to read the PDS.
Yes, we may provide medical cover for trekking in New Zealand. Trekking under altitudes of 4,000m above sea level is automatically covered by our Overseas Explorer Plan (New Zealand’s highest mountain is Aoraki/Mount Cook at 3,724 metres above sea level).
For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
Bungee jumping in New Zealand is automatically covered by our Overseas Explorer Plan.
However, skydiving is not automatically covered by our Overseas Explorer Plan. To be covered for skydiving in New Zealand, you must add our Adventure Activities Boost to your base policy (at an additional cost) for the day/s you’re going skydiving.
For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
