Need extra cover for your solo trip?

Build on your solo travel insurance plan by adding Trip Extras to get pay-per-day cover for activities like motorcycle riding, skiing and adventure sports, as well as increased limits for your valuable items and extra cancellation cover.

Why is solo travel important?

Travelling alone and at your own pace is one of the most transformative experiences a person can have. In being forced to step outside your comfort zone and put yourself out there, you can increase your confidence and experience incredible amounts of personal growth. As a solo traveler, you tend to be more approachable, too, meaning you’ll meet and interact with people in ways you just wouldn’t if you’re already travelling with a companion. Seeing as you only have yourself to rely on, your organisation skills will level up and you’re likely to feel a huge sense of accomplishment at what you have achieved.

Is travelling solo safe?

Solo travel is inherently slightly more risky than travelling with someone else, as you don’t have a buddy to check in on you or offer support if things go wrong. As such, you will need to take some extra precautions, such as staying in touch with someone back home and pre-planning certain routes. Sadly, the personal safety risks for Solo travelers are more pronounced if you are a woman, a person of colour, a member of the LGBTIQA+ community, visibly disabled and/or visibly religious. This is because misogyny, racism, homophobia, transphobia and other prejudices still exist everywhere. That said, solo travel can be a lot safer than you think, and there is increased visibility of Solo travelers of all identities en masse – with a wealth of information and resources available.

What freely doesn't cover

While we aim to provide comprehensive coverage, it's important to be aware of some exceptions in your travel insurance. Please read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) that applies to your chosen type of policy. And if you have questions, get in touch with us.

Illegal activities: Our coverage does not extend to any illegal activities.

Coverage may not apply if you exceed the specified limits for alcohol. Our policies do not provide any cover for claims which in any way relate to the ingestion of any non-prescription drug or substance.

Non-emergency treatment: Remember, our insurance is designed for travel emergencies; it doesn't cover non-urgent treatments that can wait until you return home.

Ongoing treatment at home: Ongoing medical treatment in your home country is typically not covered.

Unattended belongings: Personal belongings left unattended in public areas, such as beaches, may not be covered.

Reporting incidents: To avoid claim denial, be sure to report theft or loss within 24 hours to the appropriate authority.

Please also note that our domestic policies do not cover medical expenses incurred during your trip.

Top tips before buying travel insurance as a solo traveller

Here are some helpful tips to consider ...

3

Stay in regular contact with someone

Give someone back home a detailed itinerary, and make a plan to keep in touch regularly. We suggest adding an emergency contact to your account in the Freely app too, so they can be reached if required.

2

Be extra cautious with transport

Even though we’re big advocates of public and shared transport when it comes to the environment, in certain places and at certain times, you may face increased risk of being harassed, groped and assaulted. If you’re in doubt, arrange private transport through a reputable party where possible.

3

Be cautious dating and making friends

Connecting with new people is a beautiful part of travelling, but be careful with new love interests and friendships – especially with those you meet online or through dating apps. Meet people for the first time in a public place, use protection when you’re having sex and let someone know if you’re planning to share accommodation.
