Helpful Tip:
If your itinerary isn't locked in, when choosing a destination, select options such as 'All of Europe' rather than individual countries in the region. That way, if your plans change, you'll have coverage for any new places you visit in the region you selected.

Travel insurance for an international trip

Travelling internationally is undeniably awesome, but it comes with all sorts of risks – from getting sick when your body encounters new germs (looking at you, Bali belly) to natural disasters interfering with your pre-paid holiday plans.

Not only can dealing with the fallout of mishaps like this be tricky in a foreign country, especially if there’s a language barrier, but they can also be enormously expensive. This is where travel insurance may come in handy.

Travel insurance can provide financial cover when things go wrong overseas. That’s why the Australian Government Smartraveller website considers travel insurance “as important as a passport” if you’re heading on an international trip.

Freely’s Overseas Explorer Plan offers travellers $Unlimited~ medical and emergency dental (~medical and dental cover will not exceed 12 months from onset of the illness or injury), evacuation and repatriation, as well as benefits like lost luggage, stolen passports and trip delays.

Conditions and exclusions apply. Be sure to read our PDS to understand what’s covered.

Why is international travel insurance important?

The Australian Government’s Smartraveller considers travel insurance essential for overseas trips. Not only because it may reimburse you for mishaps like stolen luggage or additional expenses arising from flight delays – but because it can protect you from larger financial burdens arising from a medical emergency overseas.

Additionally, if you’re going to enjoy higher-risk activities like skydiving or snow sports, or you’re planning to rent a motorcycle or moped overseas, it’s important to ensure you have adequate cover for those activities.

Freely’s Overseas Explorer Plan includes benefits such as $Unlimited~ medical and emergency dental cover (~medical and dental cover will not exceed 12 months from onset of the illness or injury), evacuation and repatriation and cover for some existing medical conditions automatically (subject to the criteria in the PDS being met; for other conditions or if your conditions don’t meet the criteria, you can apply for cover).

Plus, we also provide cover for trip cancellation and amendment, lost and stolen luggage, and additional expenses arising from flight delays.

Our pay-per-day Daily Boosts provide cover for snow sports, adventure activities, moped and motorcycle rental, rental car excess and cruising. To be covered, our Daily Boosts must be added to the base policy at an additional charge for all the days the traveller wishes to be covered.

Terms and conditions apply. For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.

Is it too late to get international travel insurance?

You can buy your Freely policy any time before departing on your trip – even if you’re sitting in the airport!

However, it is often suggested for travellers to purchase their travel insurance well in advance of departing on an international trip. If you purchase your Freely policy in advance, you can access benefits such as pre-trip cancellation cover. If you’re already overseas, you can still purchase your travel insurance.

Please note, however, that if you’re buying a Freely policy when already overseas, you’ll be subject to a three-day no-cover period.

For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
