Where should I go for outdoor rock climbing overseas?

Rock climbing overseas is exhilarating and often beautiful – and participating in the sport can be a lovely way to meet like-minded outdoorsy folk if you join a community or go to a popular climbing spot.

Some stunning locations around the world include Yangshuo in China – where you can climb hundreds of bolted routes along the Li River; the lower parts of the Dolomites in Italy – which offers multi-pitch trad routes as well as Via Ferratas; Emgwenya in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province, where climbers can enjoy quartzite cliffs and a diverse range of routes; and El Chorro in Spain’s Andalusia with its limestone cliffs and deep gorges.

With Freely’s Adventure Activities Boost added to your policy, you can enjoy cover for rock climbing (at less than 2,000 metres above sea level), as well as 24-hour access to medical and emergency assistance. This includes climbing with ropes, guides and/or on bolted routes.

Do I need travel insurance to rock climb overseas?

Outdoor rock climbing comes with risks. From unpredictable weather conditions to equipment failure and human error, the potential hazards are ever present – and one wrong move or lapse in judgment can potentially lead to serious injury or worse.

While buying travel insurance is a personal decision based on what’s right for you, rock climbing overseas without it may lead to a costly medical bill if something goes wrong.

With outdoor rock climbing, good preparation is essential, including proper training, checking and rechecking equipment, considered route planning, good communication and – for some travellers – a travel insurance policy that includes cover for the activity.

Freely’s Adventure Activities Boost offers cover for travellers who are rock climbing overseas (up to 2,000 metres above sea level with ropes and/or guides, or bolted). To be covered, travellers must add this Boost to their policy at an additional cost for all the days they’re climbing.

freely’s cover for outdoor rock climbing overseas

If you’re heading overseas to rock climb, given the inherent risks of the sport and the often hard-to-access locations involved, it might be a rock solid (see what we did there?) idea to consider getting travel insurance that covers the activity.

Freely’s Adventure Activities Boost covers outdoor rock climbing with ropes, guides and on bolted routes (up to heights of 2,000 metres above sea level).

With our Adventure Activities Boost, you can enjoy $Unlimited~ medical and emergency dental (~medical and dental cover will not exceed 12 months from onset of the illness or injury), evacuation and repatriation arising from outdoor rock climbing (up to heights of 2,000 metres above sea level), as well as 24-hour access to our medical and emergency team.

To be covered, travellers must add our Adventure Activities Boost to their policy at an additional cost for all the days they’re climbing. Our Explorer Plan does not automatically cover outdoor rock climbing alone.

Travellers can add our Adventure Activities Boost to their policy when making a purchase – or in real time while they’re away, using the Freely app. Our pay-per-day Daily Boosts mean you only pay for the cover you need on the days you need it.

Top tips for rock climbing overseas

Here are some helpful tips to consider ...

1

Check your equipment

Before each climb, perform thorough equipment checks of your harnesses, ropes and carabiners. Double-check all your knots and fittings to ensure they're secure. It’s also a good idea to wear a helmet to protect your noggin against falling debris and rocks.

2

Communicate with your climbing partner

We all know communication is key and this is especially true when it comes ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience rock climbing outdoors. Collaborate with your climbing partner on the commands you’ll use when you're ready to ascend, rest, adjust your position or be belayed down. Maintain constant communication about potential hazards and any concerns you have during the climb.

3

Hone your technique

Proper climbing technique is crucial for efficiency and safety. Pay attention to footwork, body positioning and handholds. Keep your body close to the wall to maximise friction and your stability. Learning efficient movement patterns will help you tackle routes more effectively and reduce the risk of fatigue and injury.
