Travel insurance provides coverage for unexpected mishaps when you're travelling. If you’re heading off on a single trip, it’s a good idea to consider adding this layer of protection in case things go wrong – such as medical emergencies in Bali or lost luggage in Japan. Travel insurance providers such as Freely offer policies to cover all kinds of activities: from skiing and snowboarding to simply exploring a city.
Regardless of the travel insurance provider you choose, it's important to read the PDS (that‘s the product disclosure statement) before making a purchase. This is a document that outlines what is and isn't covered by that particular policy.
If you’re heading off on a trip overseas, the Australian Government website Smartraveller considers travel insurance “as important as a passport”. This is to counter some of the financial risks associated with travelling – such as getting sick and needing to be hospitalised, or having your travel plans derailed by a natural disaster.
Freely is a travel insurance and safety app that provides coverage for a range of scenarios that may arise when you’re on the road – whether you’re overseas or travelling domestically. Those travelling with Freely can enjoy 24/7 access to medical and emergency specialists, live chat with our team (7am–7pm AEST/AEDT) and the ability to add extra coverage on-the-go using the Freely app.
Though it’s best to get your travel insurance with Freely sorted before you head off on your trip – as that gives you access to benefits like pre-trip cancellation coverage – it is possible to purchase a policy from the airport as you’re leaving, or even when you are already travelling.
Just keep in mind that if you’re already on the road when you make a purchase, we have a three-day no coverage policy.
When getting a quote for a travel insurance policy with Freely, select every country you plan on visiting on your single trip. If you are travelling to multiple continents on your trip, you can also select ‘Worldwide’ as your destination. If you’re unsure of the exact destinations, you can also just select whole continents (e.g. ‘All of Europe’).
Note that if you’re stopping in a country for less than 72 hours, you don’t need to add that country to your policy, as coverage for destinations visited briefly (e.g. in transit) will automatically be covered.
Yes, but only when you add our Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess Boost to your Explorer Plan (at an additional cost) for all the days you hire a vehicle. When added to your policy, this Boost offers some protection when you’re driving overseas by covering the insurance excess or the repair costs (whichever is lower) if the rental vehicle is damaged (conditions apply).
Our Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess Boost can be used on both rental cars and campervans – the vehicle just needs to be under 6 tonnes.
You can add our Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess Boost to your Explorer Plan before you head off – or even while you’re away, using the Freely app.
Yes, but only when you add our Snow Sports Boost to your Explorer Plan (at an additional cost) for all the days you participate in snow sports. This is an important level of coverage to consider because no matter how savvy you are on the slopes, doing snow sports like skiing and snowboarding has various risks. Navigating accidents and mishaps like these in a foreign country adds an extra layer of stress and can also be very expensive.
You can add our Snow Sports Boost to your Explorer Plan before you head off – or even while you’re away, using the Freely app.
Yes, but you need to add our Motorcycle and Moped Riding Boost at an additional cost to the base policy for all the days you plan on riding or being a passenger. (Our Explorer Plan alone does not automatically cover moped or motorcycle riding.)
As a general rule, regardless of the bike’s engine capacity, you must be wearing a helmet while you ride and you cannot be racing, participating in a professional capacity or doing motocross. If you’re a passenger, the person driving the bike needs to have a valid licence for riding that vehicle.
Be mindful that there are several terms, conditions and exclusions that apply to this Boost, which you must be aware of before purchasing our travel insurance.
For more details, be sure read the PDS.
Getting pickpocketed, robbed or mugged can happen in any country. When you’re in a foreign place distracted by new sights, and especially if you look like a tourist, you can be an easier target.
Freely is there to help out if your belongings are stolen. Our Explorer Plan offers coverage for stolen luggage, valuables, money and travel documents, so that you can recuperate the costs of replacing these items (limits apply). You can also add extra coverage for your more expensive items and devices by purchasing our Gadget Trip Extra or our Specified Item Trip Extra.
Cases of loss or theft must be reported as soon as possible to both Freely and the local authorities, and always within seven days. Note that a copy of the relevant police report must be submitted to support your claim.
If you are unable to provide us with a copy of the relevant report, you must provide us with a reasonable explanation and details of the time and place it was made – including the contact details of whomever you made the report to.
