What freely covers for families

Family holidays tend to be a rather large logistical affair — visiting relatives overseas, vacationing somewhere tropical or immersing the kids in another culture. Here are some Freely benefits that may make your next trip that little bit less stressful.

Children and grandchildren

Accompanied children and grandchildren under the age of 18 are covered under the policy of their travelling guardian (as long as the children are travelling with you for the entire duration of the journey, are included in the policy, are not in full-time employment and are financially dependent on the guardian).

Emergency evacuation and repatriation

If necessary, we'll help with emergency evacuation or repatriation to bring you home. Only applies to our overseas plans.

Unexpected additional expenses

If you encounter unexpected accommodation and/or transport costs during your travels because of a covered event, we may provide cover for the additional expenses you incur.

Accompanied children means your children or grandchildren who are identified on the Certificate of Insurance and travelling with you on the journey, provided they are not in full-time employment, they are financially dependent on you and they are under the age of 18 years. Cancellation policy benefits shared among all travellers on the one policy. There’s a lot of detail to unpack in the above, so refer to and read the Combined FSG/PDS for more information. To learn about the Target Market for this product, you can read our TMD.

Remember:

To receive coverage when travelling overseas as a family, please keep in mind that all family members must leave and return to Australia together.

Cancellation policy benefits are shared amongst all travellers on the same policy. Cancellation limit applies per policy.

Find the right cover for your trip

The more people on the trip, the more cover options are worth considering. All our overseas plans include medical expenses cover, your choice for trip cancellation cover and varying luggage cover limits as standard.

Helpful Tip:

Need extra cover for your family trip?

Build on your family travel insurance plan by adding Trip Extras to get pay-per-day cover for activities like cruising, skiing and adventure sports, as well as increased limits for your valuable items and extra cancellation cover.

Why is it important consider family travel insurance?

When you’re travelling with your family, you’re responsible for the health and wellbeing of more than just yourself – not to mention, travelling with a lot more variables!

This is why it’s a good idea to consider travel insurance, which the Australian Government Smartraveller website considers “as important as a passport” if you’re heading overseas.

Travel insurance can help when a family member gets sicks or injured overseas, if your flight is delayed or if someone loses their passport (sigh, we’ve been there). In particular, families with young children may find that having travel insurance with medical and emergency cover as a benefit offers some assurance in case something goes wrong.

Freely’s overseas plans offer cover for emergency medical expenses (cover will not exceed 12 months from the onset of the illness or condition), overseas repatriation and evacuation, as well as safety alerts and 24-hour access to medical and emergency assistance via the Freely app.

Families travelling with children might also enjoy Freely’s 24-hour telehealth access with e-script capability in over 70 countries and across dozens of language.

Terms and conditions apply. For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.

What does family travel insurance cover?

A policy for family travel insurance can cover things like overseas medical and emergency dental, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation and amendment, COVID-19 and lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

When looking for travel insurance, it’s a good idea to understand the level of cover you want for your family and whether you want to add extra cover for things like trip cancellations and valuable belongings.

With Freely, families travelling on the same policy can enjoy a discount, plus accompanied children and grandchildren under the age of 21 are covered at no extra cost under the policy of their travelling guardian (terms and conditions apply).

We always recommend that travellers read the PDS to understand exactly what a family travel insurance policy does and doesn’t include as a benefit, and the terms, conditions and limits that apply.

Is it too late to get family travel insurance?

You can purchase a Freely travel insurance policy for you and your family at the last minute – even from the airport! You can get a quote and buy your policy in just minutes on our website or with the Freely app.

That said, we suggest buying travel insurance ahead of your trip to make use of benefits such as pre-trip cancellation – plus, purchasing your family travel insurance in advance means one less thing to worry about at the airport!

You can also buy Freely travel insurance while you’re already on your trip – but this means you’ll be subject to a three-day no-cover period.

For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.

Adding cover for specific family activities

Family trips often include activities and valuable items: a winter ski holiday, an adventure-heavy itinerary with older kids, a camera bought for the trip, or the usual family spread of phones and tablets.

Freely's Trip Extras include optional pay-per-day add-ons so you only pay for the extra cover on the days you need it, reflecting the way the family actually travels:

Snow Sports for family ski trips.

Adventure Activities for more adventurous activities that aren't automatically included.

Luggage Item Limit Increase for high-value items the family is taking on the trip.

Top tips before buying travel insurance for your family

Here are some helpful tips to consider ...

1

Plan your destinations and activities

Determine where you're going and what your group will be doing during your trip. This will help you choose the right coverage to suit your needs.

2

Read and understand the policy

Carefully go through the policy's Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to grasp the details of your coverage. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to us - we're here to assist you

3

Have a set of family rules

Discuss and agree upon a set of family rules before you even set off, such as staying together in crowded places and meeting at a certain point if people get lost. Some children are also likely to pet animals they see, which can be risky in countries where rabies occurs if the animal ends up biting or scratching them.
