Thailand offers travellers a tantalising blend of cultural heritage, breathtaking natural beauty and wonderfully fragrant cuisine.
The dry season is the country’s peak period for visitors – and is an ideal time for outdoor activities and island-hopping in the south. Wet season brings slightly cooler temperatures and sees the rainforest come alive with greenery, waterfalls and wildlife.
Thailand is one of few remaining countries where you can see a tiger in the wild, as well as elephants, leopards, gibbons and hornbills!
Whether you're planning on exploring ancient temples in Bangkok, indulging in traditional massage therapies in Chiang Mai or hitting up festivals like Songkran, it’s a good idea to consider travel insurance for your trip.
Freely’s Overseas Explorer Plan offers a range of benefits for your trip to Thailand, including medical and emergency dental, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation and amendment, COVID-19 and lost, stolen or damaged luggage.
Thailand is a popular destination for Australian travellers. You can jump on a direct flight from major cities like Sydney and Melbourne to Bangkok – the country’s capital – and to Phuket – its largest island.
Depending on your departure city, the flight from Australia can take anywhere from 8 to 10 hours, or a little longer if you have a stopover. Budget airlines Jetstar, Scoot and AirAsia offer regular flights to Thailand, as do Qantas and Thai Airways.
Australian passport holders are eligible for a visa exemption when travelling to Thailand for tourism purposes for up to 60 days on arrival. For the latest travel information, be sure to check the Australian Government Smartraveller website.
Although Thailand is relatively safe for tourists, travelling the country’s hundreds of islands still gives rise to all sorts of risks.
Thailand has one of the highest rates of road accidents in the world, with motorbike riders being particularly vulnerable. Because crowded tourist spots are so packed, it can be easy for belongings to be stolen or pickpocketed, and the country also has diseases such as rabies, malaria and Dengue fever.
Having travel insurance – such as Freely’s Overseas Explorer Plan – for Thailand can offer a layer of protection against the financial fallout of any incidents like this on your trip.
Importantly, if you plan to hop on a moped while in Thailand, it’s a good idea to consider the right travel insurance policy. Freely’s Motorcycle & Moped Riding Boost offers cover for this activity in Thailand, but you must add this to your base policy at an additional cost for all the days you plan to ride – as the driver or passenger.
For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
Thailand’s balmy climate makes it a delightful tropical escape – but also means that parts of the country can be impacted by monsoons. The country is also affected by floods, earthquakes and tsunamis.
Our Overseas Explorer Plan offers as a benefit medical and emergency cover for natural disasters in Thailand. Plus, if you have the Freely app downloaded to your phone and Locations Services turned on, we’ll be able to send you safety alerts for your location.
We recommend checking the Australian Government Smartraveller website for the latest safety updates about Thailand. (Note that Freely doesn’t cover claims that directly arise from you not following a ‘Do not travel’ warning issued by the Australian Government on Smartraveller.)
Additionally, you can stay abreast of forecasts for natural disasters in Thailand with the Thai Meteorological Department, the US Tsunami Warning Centre and the Mekong River Commission, which shares information on flood levels for the Mekong River.
For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
Yes, we may provide cover – but you need to add our Motorcycle and Moped Riding Boost at an additional cost to the base policy for all the days you plan on riding or being a passenger. (Our Explorer Plan alone does not automatically cover moped or motorcycle riding.)
Additionally, as a general rule, regardless of the bike’s engine capacity, you must be wearing a helmet while you ride and you cannot be racing, participating in a professional capacity or doing motocross. If you’re a passenger, the person driving the bike needs to have a valid licence for riding that vehicle.
Cover is not available if you are injured in a motorcycle or moped accident arising from being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Be mindful that there are several terms, conditions and exclusions that apply to this Boost, which you must be aware of before purchasing our travel insurance.
For more details, be sure to read the PDS.
Our Overseas Explorer Plan includes overseas medical and emergency dental as a benefit when travelling in Thailand. If you become sick or injured on your trip, we may provide cover for unexpected medical and hospital expenses (terms and conditions apply).
If you need to pay for unexpected dental treatment during your trip, we may provide cover for emergency overseas dental expenses.
Our travellers also get 24-hour access to our team of medical and emergency specialists in the case you fall sick or are injured.
For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
If you are seriously sick or injured and our emergency assistance network deems it necessary, we may arrange to fly you home to Australia for medical treatment.
We also have the option of evacuating you to another country. Every case will be individually assessed subject to medical advice.
For more details, be sure to read the PDS.
No, we will not pay for claims involving, arising from or related to your impairment due to you drinking too much alcohol which is evidenced by the results of a blood test which show that your blood alcohol concentration level is 0.19 or above (which puts you at nearly four times the legal driving limit in Australia of 0.05).
Keep in mind that a blood test is not always available and may not be the only information about the claim event that we consider. We may also be required to look at the report of a medical practitioner or forensic expert, the witness report of a third party, your own admission, your description of the event or the advice of a treating medical professional.
Be aware that any claims relating to substance or drug abuse (be it over-the-counter, prescription or otherwise), including the use of non-prescription drugs or substances, are not covered by Freely.
