What freely covers for existing medical conditions

We ask all travellers to declare existing medical conditions when getting a quote. Some conditions are automatically covered by our plans, while others may require an online health assessment. These are the steps to declare your existing medical condition:

Get a quote

When getting a quote using the Freely website or Freely app, you will be asked if any travellers on your policy have existing medical conditions to declare.

Declare your existing medical condition

If you are declaring an existing medical that is not automatically covered, you will complete a short online health assessment. Once complete, we will inform you which conditions we can cover and which we cannot.

Accept or decline cover for your existing medical condition

For existing medical conditions that we approve, you can choose to add additional cover to your base policy (premiums may apply). If we cannot provide cover, you can choose whether to proceed with a Freely policy that excludes cover for your existing medical conditions.

Helpful Tip:
Need help declaring your existing medical conditions? Please contact our customer support team on 1300 772 183 or team@gofreely.help.
Remember:

If you want to cover an existing medical condition that isn’t automatically covered by our plans, you’ll need to complete an online health assessment. We will only provide cover for existing medical conditions that meet the criteria set out in the PDS.

We cannot provide cover for claims arising from travel booked or undertaken against the advice of any medical practitioner.

Find the right cover for your trip

All our overseas plans include medical expenses cover, your choice for trip cancellation cover and varying luggage cover limits as standard - subject to the conditions set out in the PDS.

What is an existing medical condition?

An existing medical condition is any health issue you already had before you bought your travel insurance. This could be a disease, an illness, a dental condition, a medical condition or a physical impairment.

At Freely, we consider your health issue an existing medical condition if any of the following criteria are met:

• You’ve visited an emergency department, been hospitalised or had day surgery in the past 12 months due to the condition;

• ou need prescription medicine from a qualified medical practitioner (such as a doctor), regular check-ups, ongoing medication or have to see a specialist about the condition;
• Your medical records show that you’ve had cancer or have problems with your brain, heart, kidneys, liver or respiratory system;
• You’ve had surgery involving the abdomen, back, joints or spine that required at least an overnight stay in hospital; or
• Your condition is medically documented as chronic, ongoing, under investigation, pending diagnosis or pending test results.

For full details on how we define existing medical conditions, please read the PDS. If you have questions, contact our customer support team.

Why it’s important to declare your existing medical conditions

If you choose not to declare any existing condition/s that are not automatically covered by our plans, your policy may not include cover for claims relating to – or exacerbated by – your existing medical conditions.

To get cover for existing medical conditions that are not automatically covered, you need to declare these in our online health assessment (additionally, Freely must agree to provide cover for the conditions you’ve declared).

Existing medical conditions that are automatically covered

Our PDS outlines each existing medical condition that we automatically provide coverage for (listed under ‘Existing medical conditions we automatically include’), along with the criteria you must meet in order to be covered.

As a general rule, you cannot have been hospitalised or required medical treatment for your condition in the past 12 months; you cannot be under or awaiting investigation; and you cannot be waiting on surgery, treatment or a procedure for that condition.

Travellers who don’t meet the criteria will need to complete our online health assessment and declare all their conditions, including those we automatically include.

For full details on which existing medical conditions are automatically covered, please read the PDS. If you have questions, get in touch with our customer support team.

Existing medical condition cover vs general medical cover

These two parts of a travel insurance policy are easy to mix up. They live near each other on most insurance websites, they both involve the word 'medical', and the difference between them matters a fair amount when you're getting a quote. General medical cover on a standard travel insurance policy is generally designed to help with unexpected illness or injury that arises during a trip, the kind of thing nobody sees coming. Existing medical condition cover is generally designed to help with conditions you already have before you travel, subject to declaration and the assessment process. An additional premium may apply.

Top tips for travellers with existing medical conditions

Here are some helpful tips to consider ...

1

Be sure to declare all of your existing medical conditions

When getting a quote, click ‘Yes’ when asked if you have any existing medical conditions. You’ll then be guided to complete the online health assessment, which will enable us to determine whether we can cover your existing medical condition or not.

2

If your condition isn’t approved, consider if you want to travel with Freely anyway

If your existing medical condition isn’t approved or you don’t meet the criteria for it to be covered, you can still buy a Freely policy. However, in that case, keep in mind that we won’t cover claims that in any way relate to, or are exacerbated by, your existing medical condition.

3

Read and understand the policy

Carefully go through the policy's Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to grasp the details of your coverage. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to our customer support team – we're here to help.
