Trekking between 3,000–6,000m above sea level is covered when Adventure Activities Trip Extra added at an additional cost to the base policy.

What freely covers for trekking

From the majestic stratovolcano that is Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro to the spectacular Nepali Himalayas, the world is bursting with peaks to trek.

Not all expeditions or destinations are covered by our plans though, so if you're heading up to between 3,000–6,000m above sea level, you should consider adding our Adventure Activities Trip Extra.

Treks high above sea level

To be covered for trekking at heights between 3,000 and 6,000m above sea level on a trek that takes more than two days to complete but doesn’t require specialist climbing equipment, you need to our Adventure Activities Trip Extra. Treks at heights of under 3 above sea level are automatically covered by our plans.

Kokoda track

Most Kokoda tours require you to have personal travel insurance prior to departure. We offer cover for this famously gnarly trek with our Adventure Activities Trip Extra.

Medical costs for trekking

With our Adventure Activities Trip Extra, we may reimburse you for medical bills incurred from treks at heights between 3,000-6,000m above sea level, provided they take don’t require specialist climbing equipment and if your claim is approved.

Only applies to overseas plans.

Remember:

Where should I go for trekking overseas?

Trekking overseas opens up a world of adventure, with countless breathtaking trails to explore.

In Nepal, the Annapurna Circuit offers a stunning mix of lush valleys, quaint villages and Himalayan views, all without exceeding 6,000m altitude (the maximum altitude that we cover under our Adventure Boost).

For those drawn to Europe, Spain’s Camino de Santiago provides a historic pilgrimage route, blending beautiful landscapes with cultural experiences.

Closer to home, New Zealand’s Milford Track in Fiordland National Park is renowned for its dramatic scenery, from serene lakes to majestic waterfalls.

In South America, Peru’s Inca Trail leads you through cloud forests and ancient ruins to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu.

For a more tropical setting, Indonesia’s Mount Rinjani Trek on Lombok offers a challenging but rewarding journey with stunning crater lakes and panoramic views.

Wherever your trekking adventure takes you, it’s a good idea to consider travel insurance that covers trekking. Our overseas plans includes cover for treks up to 3,000m above sea level, while our Adventure Activities Trip Extra offers cover for treks at heights of 4,000–6,000m above sea level, for treks that take more than two days to complete and don't require specialist equipment.

Why consider travel insurance for trekking overseas?

The Australian Government’s Smartraveller website recommends travellers get travel insurance for adventure activities overseas: “even a minor injury can leave you with 1000s of dollars’ worth of medical bills” abroad.

When trekking overseas, travel insurance can provide a layer of financial protection against unexpected injuries, illnesses or accidents that can happen on the trail, especially in remote areas where medical help can be costly or hard to access.

Additionally, if you’re trekking in areas with limited infrastructure, travel insurance can cover things like medical evacuations and emergency transport to the nearest medical facility.

Cover for trekking under 3,000m above sea level is included in our overseas plans, while those trekking at heights of 3,000–6,000m above sea level will need to add our Adventure Activities Trip Extra to their policy (at an additional cost) for all the days they’re trekking, if the trek takes more than two days to complete.

Freely provides cover for trekking as long as it isn’t being undertaken in a professional capacity, reasonable care is taken and specialist equipment and oxygen are not being used.

Top tips for trekking overseas

Here are some helpful tips to consider ...

1

Research your trek

Learn about the trail, weather conditions and difficulty level before you go. Check if permits are required and research local customs, emergency contacts and nearby medical facilities. Being informed helps you prepare better.

2

Pack proper gear

Carry weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear, navigation tools, a first-aid kit and sufficient food and water. Always pack a charged phone, power bank and whistle for emergencies.

3

Consider trekking with a guide or with others

For treks you’re unfamiliar with, consider hiring a certified local guide or join a reputable trekking group. They’ll provide expert navigation, local insights and added safety in unfamiliar terrain. Avoid trekking solo in remote areas.
