Is travelling solo safe for women?

Travelling is usually more safe for women than people perceive it to be, and there is increased visibility of solo women travellers en masse – with a wealth of information and resources available. That said, women travellers certainly still face increased risks around the world due to the continued existence of discrimination and gender-based violence – so it's a good idea to research your destination and itinerary before you head off.

What are women’s rights in other countries?

Some countries are doing a better job than others when it comes to legislating for women’s safety and enshrining women’s rights in the law. Lots of destinations still have laws that discriminate against women – or have a lack of laws that offer women protection – and this can extend to travellers. In other countries, there are rules around what women can and cannot wear in public. Before you go anywhere, it's a good idea to research the local laws and customs of the destination/s you are travelling to.

What freely doesn't cover

While we aim to provide comprehensive coverage, it's important to be aware of some exceptions in your travel insurance. Please read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) that applies to your chosen type of policy. And if you have questions, get in touch with us.

Illegal activities: Our coverage does not extend to any illegal activities.

Coverage may not apply if you exceed the specified limits for alcohol. Our policies do not provide any cover for claims which in any way relate to the ingestion of any non-prescription drug or substance.

Non-emergency treatment: Remember, our insurance is designed for travel emergencies; it doesn't cover non-urgent treatments that can wait until you return home.

Ongoing treatment at home: Ongoing medical treatment in your home country is typically not covered.

Unattended belongings: Personal belongings left unattended in public areas, such as beaches, may not be covered.

Reporting incidents: To avoid claim denial, be sure to report theft or loss within 24 hours to the appropriate authority.

Please also note that our domestic policies do not cover medical expenses incurred during your trip.

Top tips when you're travelling

Here are some helpful tips to consider ...

1

Be aware of local laws

In some countries, there are rules and customs around how women should behave in public and where they can and cannot go by themselves. We recommend that you research your destination’s laws before you get there.

2

Dress with your destination in mind

In some countries and cultures, there may be more strict expectations or even laws on women’s dress than you are used to back home. Do your research, and respect local laws and customs even if you strongly disagree with them.

3

Be extra cautious with transport

Even though we’re big advocates of public and shared transport when it comes to the environment, in certain places and at certain times, women face increased risk of being harassed, groped and assaulted. If you’re in doubt, arrange private transport through a reputable party where possible.
