What freely covers for car rental

Renting a car overseas or in Australia means you can travel on your own terms. But there’s nothing worse than being footed with a huge excess bill if your rental vehicle is in an accident, gets stolen or is vandalised. Rental vehicle insurance excess is available on our Explorer and Explorer Pro plans.

Campervan and motorhome

Our rental vehicle insurance excess provides excess coverage for rental convertibles, campervans and motorhomes, as long as the vehicle is under 6 tonnes.

Damaged vehicle excess

If your rental vehicle is damaged while in your control, we can pay the lower of the rental vehicle insurance excess or the repair costs.

Vehicle theft excess

If your rental vehicle is stolen while in your control, we can help by paying the rental vehicle insurance excess that would be owed to the rental company.

Remember:

Find the right cover for your trip

Our Explorer and Explorer Pro plans include rental vehicle insurance excess cover - along with your choice for trip cancellation cover and varying luggage cover limits.

Managing the rental vehicle insurance excess when hiring a car overseas

Rental vehicle insurance excess is the amount a hire company can charge you after damage or theft of your rental vehicle, and it varies wildly between providers and regions. A few things are worth thinking about before you book.

Ask the hire company how their excess works

Excess amounts are almost never standardised. They vary significantly between countries and between providers, and one-way or campervan hire can carry loaded excess amounts on top of the baseline. Ask before you book, and note the figure you'd actually be liable for.

Check the road conditions on your route

The rental vehicle insurance excess cover excludes damage sustained on unsealed surfaces, so unsealed-road, off-road, and beach driving sit outside the scope of the cover. If your trip includes any of that, factor it in before you book, and check the rental agreement for any additional restrictions the hire company applies.

Check the hire company's driver conditions

Hire companies sometimes apply age-related or licence-related excess loadings on top of their base excess. Read the rental agreement before you book so you know the figure you'd actually be liable for.

What rental vehicle insurance excess cover is designed to help with

Rental vehicle insurance excess cover is generally designed to help with the insurance excess a hire company can charge you under the rental agreement after a covered event. Below is a short walkthrough of the scenarios the cover is typically designed to respond to.

Excess charges after damage to the rental vehicle

If the rental vehicle is damaged during your hire and the hire company applies their insurance excess to you under the rental agreement, that excess amount is what the cover is generally designed to help with, up to the limit set out in the PDS. Common scenarios include a parking-lot bingle, a single-vehicle incident, and damage from a collision where the hire company holds you liable.

Excess charges after theft of the rental vehicle

If the rental vehicle is stolen during your hire and the hire company holds you to the insurance excess under the rental agreement, that excess amount sits within the scope of the cover, subject to the conditions in the PDS.

Cars, and campervans and motorhomes under 6 tonnes are all in scope

The cover applies to rental vehicles broadly, so cars, and campervans and motorhomes under 6 tonnes are all generally within scope. Hire companies often apply higher base excesses on campervan and motorhome bookings, so checking the rental agreement before you book gives you a clear sense of the figure the cover would respond to.
