What freely covers for seniors

Travelling is a wonderful endeavour, no matter your age. We want senior travellers to be able to explore the world while feeling that help is only a call away. Here's a roundup of some Freely features that may provide an extra layer of protection.

Overseas medical and dental expenses

If you get sick or injure yourself overseas, you may be able to claim unlimited medical expenses incurred overseas. Cover will not exceed 12 months from onset of illness or condition.

24/7 emergency assistance and safety features

With Freely, you'll get 24/7 access to medical and emergency specialists, telehealth and geo-specific safety alerts designed to keep you safe.

Existing medical conditions

Freely automatically provides cover for a range of existing medical conditions (subject to the criteria in the PDS). For conditions that don’t meet the criteria for auto cover or conditions that are not automatically covered, you can complete a health assessment at the same time you purchase your policy. If approved, an additional premium may apply.

Remember:

Find the right cover for your trip

Whether you’re exploring new corners of the globe, kicking back on a holiday or visiting loved ones, all our overseas plans include medical expenses cover, your choice for trip cancellation cover and varying luggage cover limits as standard.

Why consider travel insurance as a senior traveller?

Travelling as a senior can be an incredibly rewarding experience. With retirement often comes the time and freedom to explore new places, visit family and friends overseas or finally tick those dream destinations and experiences off your bucket list.

However, travel also comes with its own set of risks, particularly for seniors. The Australian Government Smartraveller advises travellers to purchase travel insurance, “regardless of who you are, where you're going and what you're doing”.

One of the most compelling reasons for senior travellers to get travel insurance is medical cover, particularly considering that medical assistance is usually the highest unexpected cost for Australians overseas. Travel insurance can provide financial and practical support if you get sick or injured overseas. With our overseas plans, you’ll also get 24-hour access to a team of medical and emergency specialists, including nurses, paramedics and doctors.

It’s not just illness and injury you need to be mindful of when travelling: no matter where you’re going, things can go wrong – from lost luggage to trip cancellation, all of which can be taxing on both your wallet and the quality of your time away. Travel insurance can often help with that.

What to look out for when buying travel insurance as a senior traveller

When choosing a travel insurance as a senior traveller, there are several factors you should consider, as both your age and your health will influence the cost and type of policy you need.

It's important to disclose any existing health conditions you have to your insurer before purchasing a policy. They might ask you to complete a health check or assessment beforehand. With Freely, you can complete a short online health assessment when you get a quote using our website or the Freely app. Please contact our customer support team if you need help with this.

If you are unable to find a policy that covers complications arising from your particular medical issue, the Australian Government Smartraveller suggests that you still purchase a policy that covers other scenarios that might go wrong on your trip (such as trip cancellation, lost or stolen luggage or trip amendment).

Cruise travel insurance for senior travellers

Cruising is a wonderful way to see the world, especially for senior travellers who love the water!

To get cover for ocean- and seagoing cruises outside of Australia that are longer than two nights (multi-night), you must add our Cruise Trip Extra to your policy (at an additional cost), from the day you board to the day you disembark. It is mandatory to add the Boost in order to be covered for the cruise.

If you become sick or injured while on your cruise and you have purchased our Cruise Trip Extra for your journey, we may provide cover for unexpected onboard or ship-to-shore medical expenses.

Similarly, with our Cruise Trip Extra, if you contract COVID-19 before or on your trip, you may be able to claims the cost of additional accommodation and expenses because of it. Sub-limits and a special excess apply.

For more details, be sure to read the PDS.

Declaring your existing medical conditions

A lot of senior travellers have something to declare when getting a travel insurance quote, whether it's a long-managed condition or something more recent. The declaration process is the same whether you're travelling in your sixties or your eighties, and it's designed to make sure any cover applicable to your conditions is based on accurate information. Our Existing medical conditions page has more info on this.

Important things to know for seniors travel insurance

Here are some helpful tips to consider ...

1

Be sure to declare all of your existing medical conditions

When getting a quote, click ‘Yes’ when asked if you have any existing medical conditions. You’ll then be guided to complete the online health assessment, which will enable us to determine whether we can cover your existing medical condition or not.

2

Read the PDS before buying travel insurance

PDS stands for product disclosure statement. It’s a document that financial service providers (including travel insurance companies) publish so that customers fully understand what they’re purchasing. Freely’s PDS includes information about how our travel insurance policies work: the benefits, conditions and exclusions, as well as our complaints-handling procedure – among other things.

3

Keep up to date with official travel advice

Head to the Australian Government Smartraveller website to read the travel advice for all the destinations you plan to visit, and subscribe to stay abreast of any changes.  The site is updated regularly with information about natural disasters, political unrest and other crises that may impact travellers. You can also subscribe to keep up-to-date with any changes.
