So, here you are. You’ve spent months researching your destination and planning your holiday. You’ve booked your flights, nabbed an adorable villa and have marked out a slew of fabulous bars for sunset cocktails.

Then comes the moment to consider travel insurance ...

And with the cost of living (and travelling) at dizzying heights, you can’t help but ask yourself, “Do I really need travel insurance anyway?”

While purchasing travel insurance is a personal decision, based on individual factors, it's something the Australian Government Smartraveller website considers "as important as a passport" if you're heading overseas.

But why?

These just some of the reasons we at Freely think it's a good idea to consider taking out travel insurance for your trip.

1. Travel insurance can assist in medical emergencies

There isn’t much that is more important than your health.

Let's say you have travel insurance and you have an accident, acquire an injury or come down with an illness overseas (such as Bali belly), travel insurance can provide a layer of protection against the unexpected medical costs associated with your treatment.

And given the cost of medical attention in other countries, having travel insurance with overseas medical and emergency cover may be the difference between recuperating or losing hundreds or thousands of dollars as a result.

Freely's Overseas Explorer Plan offers unlimited~ medical and emergency, evacuation and repatriation cover, and includes automatic cover for some existing medical conditions (subject to the criteria in the PDS being met), while for other conditions or if your conditions don’t meet the criteria, you can apply for cover.

Plus, with Freely, you can get telehealth advice and 24-hour access to our medical and emergency experts – and if you're travelling with the Freely app, you can access those in just a few taps!

2. Travel insurance can offer protection for trip cancellations

The next instance where you might be glad to have travel insurance is in the case of trip cancellations outside of your control.

For example, let's say prior to your departure you become unexpectedly unfit to travel or a relative unexpectedly has a serious accident leading to hospitalisation – and you need to cancel or amend your trip as a result.

If you need to unexpectedly amend or cancel your trip for a covered reason, Freely can reimburse you for the costs of your prepaid, non-refundable travel arrangements (we offer up to $5,000 cover with our Overseas Explorer Plan).

Spent more than $5,000 on flights and accommodation? Travellers can add our Extra Cancellation Trip Extra to get cover for the full amount in increments of $1,000.

Importantly, when it comes to cancellations caused by transport-providers – for example, when an airline cancels a flight – Freely will cover the unused portion of any prepaid accommodation, day tour or car hire that you miss as a result – but we don't cover the cost of new flights (unless caused by strike), as it is the responsibility of the airline to arrange you alternative flights.

For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.

3. Travel insurance can cover lost, damaged or stolen belongings

If you've bought yourself a new GoPro or laptop to embark on an overseas adventure, only to have it stolen from your locked hotel room – you wouldn't be the first person this has happened to.

It's pretty disheartening to have your items stolen while overseas – or damaged in a way you couldn't prevent –, but it might be comforting to know that travel insurance can help out.

If you're travelling with Freely's Overseas Explorer Plan and your luggage or travel documents are lost, stolen, or damaged on your trip, we can reimburse you for your items or for repairing your items up to $10,000 (the limit per item is $750).

Travellers who want greater protection (i.e. more than $750 per item) for their belongings can add our Gadget Trip Extra or Specified Item Trip Extra to their policy at an additional cost

For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
