After several years under a COVID-19 cloud, the cruise industry has bounced back, with cruise lines implementing new health measures to ensure the safety of their passengers.
While river cruising is automatically included in Freely’s Explorer Plan (both domestic and international), travellers hopping on a sea or ocean-going cruise for more than two nights (multi-night) in international waters must add our Cruise Cover Boost to the base policy at an additional cost, from the day you board to the day you disembark.
Cruising is a fabulous way to see the world – but like any trip away from home, there’s always the potential for something unexpected to happen.
Knowing this, some cruise lines require cruise-specific insurance before allowing you to board. The Australian Government Smartraveller considers it so important they say that if you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel.
Travel insurance for your cruise overseas – such as what Freely offers – can offer protection against the financial burden of incidents like medical emergencies, stolen luggage onboard and missed port departures.
Freely offers travel insurance for international cruises. To be covered, you need to add our Cruise Cover Boost to your Overseas Explorer Plan at an additional cost from the day you board to the day you disembark.

COVID-19 is still disrupting travel plans, making it a major concern for international cruise travellers.
That’s why it might be a good idea to consider a travel insurance policy that includes cover for medical incidents and trip disruptions caused by COVID-19.
When you add Freely’s Cruise Cover Boost to your Explorer Plan (at an additional cost, for all the days you’re onboard), you can enjoy cover for things like pre-cruise cancellations, pre-cruise trip amendments and onboard medical expenses that arise if you and/or your travel companion (listed on your policy) contracts COVID-19 (sub-limits and a special excess apply).
Please note, however, that Freely does not offer cover for cruise cabin confinement costs related to COVID-19 – regardless of whether it’s you or other passengers who are diagnosed.
For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
We understand that older travellers may want to enjoy their cruise while having access to medical and emergency support, just in case something goes wrong.
That’s why senior travellers might be interested in travelling with Freely’s Cruise Cover Boost.
With Freely, senior travellers going on a cruise overseas can enjoy 24-hour access to our medical and emergency team, as well as cover for onboard medical costs, ship-to-shore medical costs and COVID-19 (sub-limits and a special excess apply), subject to meeting criteria outlined in the PDS.
For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
While the Australian Government Smartraveller advises travellers to purchase travel insurance “regardless of where you're going and what you're doing”, buying travel insurance is a personal decision based on your own circumstances.
When you’re on an international cruise, things like seasickness, medical emergencies and missed port departures can disrupt your trip and lead to significant costs (medical care at sea tends to be very expensive). This is why some travellers like to cruise with travel insurance.
With Freely, when you add our Cruise Cover Boost to your Overseas Explorer Plan (at an additional cost, for all the days you’re onboard), you’re covered for onboard and ship-to-shore medical costs (subject to criteria outlined in the PDS) and can enjoy 24-hour access to our medical and emergency specialists.
For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
If you’re taking a cruise from an Australian port, please visit our Domestic Cruise page.

The level of cover you get for your international cruise will depend on what your travel insurance provider offers.
When you add Freely’s Cruise Cover Boost to your base policy, you’re covered for:

• Missing a pre-booked connection to a ship or other transport connection, beyond your control
• Missing shore excursions due to unforeseen reasons, if you hold a prepaid ticket or pass
• Onboard medical expenses if diagnosed with COVID-19 (sub-limits and a special excess apply)
Additionally, when travelling with Freely, you get 24-hour access to our medical and emergency team in case something goes wrong.
Limits, sub-limits, conditions and exclusions apply. For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
While it is a personal decision, it is often suggested to purchase your cruise travel insurance well in advance of your cruise so that you can access pre-trip cancellation and amendments benefits.
For instance, if you’ve purchased your Freely policy and our Cruise Cover Boost in advance of your cruise and and then unexpectedly need to amend or cancel your trip for a covered reason, we may reimburse you for the costs of your prepaid, non-refundable travel arrangements.
For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
You may be. When you have our Cruise Cover Boost added to your base policy at an additional cost and, due to an unforeseeable circumstance outside your control, you miss your pre-booked port or your pre-booked connection, we may pay the reasonable costs to use alternative public transport to catch up on your planned itinerary.
For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
When getting a quote for Freely travel insurance for your cruise in another country, select all the countries that the cruise will be stopping into, as well as any other countries that you’re visiting on your trip.
Then, add our Cruise Cover Boost to your base policy, from the day you board to the day you disembark.
Please be aware that without adding and paying for our Cruise Cover Boost, you will not be covered for your international cruise.
For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.
